Dept. of American Fascism (analog)

No link here, just a brief and disturbing anecdote to report. My 15-yr old nephew started high school in upstate NY last week. On Friday, the principal made the following announcement on the loudspeaker:

"All students are asked to show their patriotism and support by wearing red, white, and blue clothing all week next week."

And your problem with that is ... what? Would you rather instill pride in nations that have a different heritage than the one your nephew has grown up in? You have the right to be disagreable about the Red,White and Blue. In another country you would not. Kind of a catch-22 to be proud of America or proud of the right to put down America? Gosh... either way it is the Red, White, and Blue heritage.

I too am a patriot, but like the Minutemen, I believe that uniforms forced on our populace can miss the intent that our Founding Fathers had when they wrote the Declaration of Independence. It's not like the principal of the school is asking kids to dress in Chinese colors, or Turkish colors. So it's not a matter of loyalty to the U.S.A. that we're debating here.

What is at stake is freedom. It's what Jefferson and Hamilton wrote about in the federalist papers. Forcing kids to wear national colors sounds like something a Soviet school superintendant would do. What do you want to bet that the principal in this case sends home kids who refuse to comply? If that happens, will the kids who wear Ol' Glory's colors be truly proud or will they come to learn that the colors have come to represent freedom for those who agree with the government.

Don't tread on me.
