I don't quite see how Raines is responsible for Jayson Blair. Nobody is spelling that out. They just say Raines "was responsible for a hard-charging environment." ? It feels like a PR move: the cleansing.
On other thing: you never really know, as a reader, what an Exec. Editor is responsible for. I mean, did he fight for A Nation At War? Or the great photos? Or the fact that the Sports section was flipped for four weeks or something? Their work, sadly for them, is invisible.
