I'm new to this blog, so sorry if this is an inappropriate post. Obviously blog spam has been a major problem here. While you want to allow contributions and comments to come in from the outside world, obviously, you don't want "Free Lesbian XXX Sex!" advertised on the site.
Is there a way to disallow "a href=" or even strip "http://" from the comment engine? This would take away the incentive to spam in the first place...they wouldn't get the Google rating improvement that they came for. Maybe even disallow the comment altogether if someone attempts to do either command.
How does one recommend something like this to Movable Type?
Posted by cubemate at March 13, 2004 01:15 PMwhat you're requesting doesn't require any assistance from MT or SixApart. it can just be done by
1. stripping out the MTCommentAuthorLink or MTCommentURL tags from the templates
2. under Preferences, unchecking "Allow HTML in comments" and "Auto-link URLs."
Personally, as unofficial administrator of Saturation, I believe that dis-allowing linking from comments to prevent comment spam is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Or something. I like being able to link and use HTML in comments. There have been many occasions where the comment links have been as good or better than the original posts.
However, your points are well taken and I have taken Noah's sage advice and removed the URL field in the comments form, and as of last week, I installed (at the urging of dbrown and kevin after they discovered the free Lesbian sexxx was just a scam) MT-Blacklist, a great plug-in for MT which uses regular expressions to check each comment against an updated list of undesireable values and sites.
So hopefully you won't be seeing as much blatant comment spam on Saturation...
Thanks for the concern.
