How to Sell a Book

1939b.1-ad.jpg

Amidst the slight kerfuffle about advertising in textbooks (not a new idea), I dug this print ad for the book that eventually won Linus Pauling his Nobel for chemistry. It is so sweet, the swoop of the "new!," and to think that that was all it took back then.

Pretty neat. I would like to do a Banksy superglue an oil portrait of Linus Pauling on the wall at the Met next to the enormous pre-guillitine painting of Lavoissier w/wife.

Well, as I just discovered [on our backlist], by 1986 Linus Pauling had decided that the swoop of "new" was no longer enough, and was peddling his book How to Live Longer and Feel Better on Phil Donahue.
